ENTHRALLING PUNE RACING SEASON 2026 SET TO CAPTIVATE RACING ENTHUSIASTS
The stage is set for another exciting chapter in Indian horse racing as the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) prepares to host the Pune Racing Season 2026, commencing on 17th July and concluding on 15th November 2026. Spread over 21 race days across four months, the season promises a compelling blend of top-class competition, prestigious classics, and lucrative prize money, reaffirming Pune's reputation as one of India's premier racing centres.
The official prospectus reveals that the season will offer stakes exceeding ₹14 crore, providing owners, trainers, jockeys, and breeders with an attractive incentive while ensuring racegoers witness high-quality contests week after week. With a carefully structured racing programme and strong professional participation, expectations are high for an outstanding season.
The Crown Jewel – Villoo C. Poonawalla Pune Derby
The undisputed highlight of the season will be the Villoo C. Poonawalla Pune Derby (Gr.1), scheduled for 11th October 2026. Carrying a magnificent purse of ₹1 crore, the prestigious classic will once again showcase the country's finest three-year-olds in a contest that traditionally attracts the best equine talent from across India.
Another race that commands immense respect is the Indian St. Leger (Gr.1) on 20th September, the oldest and most demanding classic in the Indian racing calendar. Run over an extended distance, the St. Leger is widely regarded as the ultimate examination of stamina and class, with this year's edition carrying prize money of ₹75 lakh.
Strong Horse Population and Professional Strength
The Pune Race Course will host a formidable equine population during the season. A total of 844 horses are presently stationed at Pune, including 281 two-year-olds, indicating an encouraging influx of promising young talent alongside seasoned campaigners. The sizeable juvenile strength also promises an exciting series of maiden and classic preparatory races throughout the season.
The professional ranks remain equally impressive, with 29 'A' licensed trainers and 51 'A' licensed jockeys set to compete. Their participation is expected to ensure keen competition and maintain the high standards of racing synonymous with Pune.
Adding further depth to the programme, outstation horses will be permitted to compete freely, with restrictions applicable only in the lower classes. This progressive policy is likely to increase field sizes, enhance competitiveness, and produce stronger betting races throughout the season.
